But, they are some negative aspects of
social media. ‘The overuse of social media is a global problem impacting all
generations. As the popularity of social media sites continuously grows,
networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram continue to evolve.’ (Shellabarger, 2016) Also, social media can also be a place where
they portray themselves as someone they’re not. ‘social media
also causes many young adults to compare themselves to others and envy a life
that may not be attainable since many brands and individuals only share a small percentage of their lives online.’ (Shellabarger, 2016) More importantly, they can sometimes be
easily influenced, comparing themselves to the next person they see in the
media resulting in feeling the need to change their physical appearance. The
thing with social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is that
you the things you see are what the person who posted it is allowing you to
see. Social media success is based on image and social presence, people aren’t
going to share with you every moment of their lives because not every moment is
perfect.

In relation to the topic at hand, one of the
most obvious negative aspects of social media and social networking is losing
face-to-face contact with other people. Teenagers tend to sit around on their devices
all day long whether it be a phone, a tablet or a laptop, spending on hours on
social networks instead of communicating with real people. The outcome is that
now many teenagers feel more comfortable with their virtual friends than with
their real ones. Most teenagers base their lack of communication and social
skills on the fact they think that it is easier to chat on the Internet. With
the amount time spent on social media, teenagers and young adults start
developing social media addictions. ‘The addictive part of the social media is very bad and can disturb
personal lives as well. The teenagers are the most affected by the addiction of
the social media. They get involved very extensively and are eventually cut off
from the society.’ (Tech Maish, 2016)
