Religion power, especially God. We can see that how

Religion plays an
important role in our lives as it can be a guide for us to shape our character
and attitude to become a well-rounded person. Religion is often related to the
belief of a person towards a superhuman controlling power, especially God. We
can see that how important is religion in our lives as it is being emphasised
in the first principle of Rukun Negara, “Belief in God”.  Among the main religions in Malaysia which are
Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism, our group has decided to
choose Christianity in this moral journey. Christianity, with over 2 billion
adherents, is the most popular religion in the world. According to the 2010
Population and Housing Census, Christianity is practised by only 9.2% of the
population in Malaysia, which is classified as a minority religion in Malaysia.
Christianity is a religion based on Jesus Christ’s life and his teachings. It
is divided into many denominations: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and
Protestant. During this collective journey through Christianity, the most
memorable value that we have learned is the Fruit of The Spirit which is the
sum of 9 attributes. The nine attributes included love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Among the Fruit of The
Spirit, the value of patience for us is the one that we get to understand and
experience the most. The value of patience really meant something to us because
we tend to experience many problems in our daily lives. According to the
scripture of Romans 5:2-4, “through whom we have gained access by faith into
this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that
suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
From the scripture, we learnt that being patient and waiting upon God is an
important lesson for us to practise. Sometimes, we might feel that He is not
there when we need Him but in fact, He is carrying us on His shoulders without
us noticing until we stop and look back. Sometimes, God allows these things to
happen to us so that we may reconcile with him and rekindle that passion for
Him again. With patience in one’s heart, it brings out the true character of a
person and this is what He wants from a person. All in all, we should wait upon
Lord even when things are going for the wrong turn for those who wait upon the
Lord shall be renewed in their strength as Isaiah 40:31 states that, “but for
those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings
like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Next, the fruit of spirit
mentioned in the Holy Bible is self-control. Proverbs 25:28 mentions that “Like
a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control”. This
verse clearly states that a person who does not have self-control is like a
city with broken walls, which means that the person is very vulnerable to any
types of unhealthy activities or desires such as money, drugs and lust. Self-control
is one of the most important moral value that keeps us from doing bad. The
value of self-control can be applied almost everywhere and anytime as well as in
class during lecture. For instance, many students tend to play with their
smartphones or talk to each other with the reason of sleepiness and boring. We
must be clear that this is very rude and disrespectful to the lecturer. Students
should have self-control over their desire to play with their phone. Moreover,
in order to avoid being sleepy in class, students should also sleep early the
night before. Most of the students tend to sleep late because there are
assignments due, or even busy watching movies and playing video games. This is
where the value of self-control should come in. Students must be able to
control their own personal desires and try to sleep early so that they won’t be
sleepy during early morning classes the day after. Therefore, the value of self-control
is very important in our life and should be acquired by everyone as insisted in
1Thessalonians 5:6, “So then, let us be awake and sober.”  in order to make the world a better place to
live in.

Another fruit of the
Spirit is joy. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16, it states that, “Be joyful always.”
From this scripture, it clearly states that God wants everyone to be joyful all
the time despite any circumstances. Every day, we deal many problems in our
lives but sometimes we cannot stay positive and be joyful at that moment.
However, we must learn to be joyful in every situation. There are many examples
in the Bible. The last 4 years of Paul’s life were terrible. He spent about 2
years in prison. After that he was put on a ship to Rome for his appearance before
Emperor Nero. On the way, the ship wrecked and left stranded on an island. He
was bitten by a snake and continued sailing to Rome and was put into jail for
another 2 years in Rome. During this 2 years, he was chained 24/7. Although
facing all these situations, Paul says in Philippians 1:18 “……I rejoice. Yes,
and I will continue to rejoice”. This is the perfect example in Bible that
remind us to be joyful all the time.

In conclusion, based on
our research in Christianity, we have learned that we must be patient,
self-controlled and joyful all the time as a preparation for ourselves to deal
with the problems in this world full of challenges. Furthermore, we need to
apply all of these values in our life so that we have a clear vision and a
better planning for our future. From the Old Testament that deals with the
preparation and implementation of God’s promise about the birth of Jesus Christ
up to the New Testament that shows the testimony of the life, death and triumph
over death of Jesus Christ, it is crystal-clear that as a Christian, we must
let go of our ignorance and be obedient to refer to the Bible as a guidance in
our lives.
